Sensory Play
Children are like little scientists, they learn by exploring their world through their senses: touch, taste, smell, sight and hearing.
Children are curious and like to experiment with what they are doing, so with that in mind, give children the opportunity to
engage in sensory play.
Sensory play provides a wonderful experience for children because it is fun, simple and a natural way to learn new skills.
The beauty about sensory play is that it gives children some control over play and
this is because sensory play is unstructured and open-ended.
Sensory play promotes many learning experiences:
- encourages imagination and creative play
- develops language and communication - experimenting with language and descriptive words
- encourages children to manipulate and mould materials, building up their fine motor skills and coordination
- encourages children to self-express, hence helps to build self-esteem
- develops social skills: learning to take turns and learning to share
Start today, create a safe play environment and provide appropriate materials to stimulate children senses, develop their skills and give them a new and enjoyable experience.
